Answer all the questions.

1.      Answer any TWO of the following:                                                                              [15 marks each]

a)      Write giving reasons, what would you do in the following situations?  
(i)                  You have a brilliant idea which you tell your colleagues. One of these colleagues presents your idea to your boss without acknowledging that it was your idea.
(ii)                You notice that a colleague spends more time on the internet than working.
b)      Write about the following topics.    
(i)      Three things you are going to do this year.
(ii)    Three things you will have done by 2020.
(iii)   Three predictions about India and China.
(iv)  Three global problems you think will get better in next five years and three things that will get worse.
c)      Write an article on alternative sources of energy, i.e. other than oil or coal, and their problems.

2.      Answer any FIVE of the following:                                                                           [10 marks each]

a)      Write a letter to a local newspaper appealing for support for a project to help old people in your area.
b)      Write a memo on the death of a woman who started in a company as a cleaner, and gradually worked her way up to more and more influential position; she always fought for women's rights, both inside the firm and outside. 
c)      Write a text intended to encourage people to visit your favourite restaurant.    
d)      Write an email to a colleague from another department that you haven't met before. You are going to a conference together and need to arrange hostels, flights and meals together. It introduces yourself and suggests a location for a pre-conference meeting.     
e)      Fill in the gaps in the table with a verb, noun or past participle.

f)        Rewrite these sentences to make them clearer and more precise.   
                                             i.            It is essential that a check is made to ensure that the disk drive unit is switched on before the disk or disks are inserted into the drive unit.
                                           ii.            The following points should be borne in mind when dealing with communication problems.
                                          iii.            Let us now tackle the problem of giving a definition of X.
                                         iv.            P was different from Q. the reason can be explained by the fact that P has a higher value than Q.
                                           v.            In this document an analysis is made of all the possible solutions.

3.      Answer any TEN of the following:                                                 [2 marks each]
a)      Put in apostrophes where necessary in the following sentences. 
                                 i.            Peter asked Jenys father for all the customers addresses.
                               ii.            She wont go to the dentist because its too late.
b)      Report the following items of direct speech, choosing in each case one of the reporting words given.      [accuse, deny]
i.  "There's no point in trying to deny it, Sheila", her boy friend said. "You've been going out with other men behind my back."
ii. "Don't start suggesting that I was responsible", Fred said. "I wasn't even here when the fire started".
c)      Choose the most appropriating words or phrases from the options given to fill the blanks in the following sentences. 
i.                     Most of the interesting things take place on Saturday and Sunday. ……………., a weekend is the best time for a visit. (For example, Namely, I.e., In other words)
ii.                   For a baby, breast milk has many advantages over bottle milk. ………….., it builds up the baby's defences against diseases. (I.e., Namely, For example, In other words)
d)      Put the following sentences in the right order. 
i           To start with, make sure that everything is switched off.
ii         It is also a good idea at this point to check that the gas cylinder isn't empty.
iii        Lighting a calor gas heater is easy and safe if you follow these simple instructions.
iv       Now, turn the tap on the top of the gas cylinder to ON.
e)      Suggest suitable punctuation for the following sentences:

ii         They made two important decisions the oldest houses would be pulled down the more recent ones would be repaired.
f)        Complete the following passage using the words and phrases given:
